A Columbia woman who worked as a guard at a South Carolina prison had a sexual relationship with an inmate and helped him smuggle contraband into the correctional institution, according to the state Department of Corrections.

On Friday, 25-year-old Jazmin Alexis Teas was charged with first-degree sexual misconduct with an inmate, criminal conspiracy and misconduct in office, the South Carolina Department of Corrections said in a news release.
Teas also was fired from her job as a correctional officer at Wateree River Correctional Institution, according to the release. That’s a male-only, minimum security prison in the Rembert area of Sumter County.
Between April 1 and July 16, Teas had sex with an inmate at the prison, and confessed to the crime, according to an arrest warrant.
During that same time, Teas conspired with the inmate to bring contraband into the prison, an arrest warrant shows. Teas retrieved the “unknown contraband” that was brought into the facility, another arrest warrant says. Teas also confessed to this crime, according to the arrest warrant.
Teas was issued $5,000 personal recognizance bonds for each of the charges, and they were posted the same day she was arrested, Sumter County court records show.

Similar charges at same prison
Teas is not the only guard who worked at Wateree River Correctional Institution who was fired this year for having sex with an inmate at the prison. On Feb. 26, Zoe Maple was charged with providing prisoners contraband, dissemination of obscenity and misconduct in office, The State previously reported.
Maple engaged in a romantic relationship with an inmate while providing obscene material of herself via cell phone transmissions, according to an arrest warrant. Maple also conspired to furnish the inmate with alcohol inside the prison, The State reported.
Maple, who resigned from her job at the prison, was released on a $20,000 bond on the combined charges, which are pending, records show.
