Expected heavy rain across some of central South Carolina prompted a flood watch for several Midlands counties, according to the National Weather Service of Columbia.

Lexington, Richland, Sumter, Calhoun, Clarendon, Bamberg and portions of Orangeburg counties could be impacted. The flood watch is in effect from noon “late,” according to the advisory issued early Friday morning.
The National Weather Service expects showers and thunderstorms in the region Friday, with two to four inches of rain possible. Some could see more than five inches of rain, according to the advisory.

Urban and poor drainage areas could see flooding. Excessive runoff could also lead to flooding in creeks, streams and low-lying areas.
