Columbia man dies in hospital following crash, South Carolina coroner says

A South Carolina man was recently killed in a crash involving a pickup truck, according to the Orangeburg County Coroner’s Office.

Cecil F. Jamison, a 62-year-old from Columbia, died July 23 in what Coroner Sean Fogle called an accident.

The collision happened at about 3:10 p.m. in Orangeburg County, said Lance Cpl. Brittany Glover of the South Carolina Highway Patrol.

Jamison was walking east and attempting to cross U.S. 21 near the intersection with McMichael Street when he was hit by a northbound 2021 Honda Ridgeline, according to Glover.

Jamison suffered multiple blunt force injuries and was taken to MUSC Health Orangeburg where the pedestrian later died, Fogle said.

Glover said the pickup driver was not hurt, and no other injuries were reported.

There was no word if the pickup driver was wearing a seatbelt, but the crash continues to be investigated by the Highway Patrol.

Through July 19, at least 464 people had died on South Carolina roads in 2026, according to the state Department of Public Safety. A minimum of 914 people were killed in collisions in South Carolina in 2025, DPS data shows.

At least 17 people have died in Orangeburg County crashes this year, and 31 people died in wrecks there in 2025, according to DPS data.
