By admin Charleston-based MUSC Health has opened an expanded Emergency Department in its downtown Columbia hospital on Forest Drive. Formerly Providence Hospital, MUSC purchased the facility in 2021, and in 2024 announced a major expansion of its emergency department the health system said would double the ER’s capacity.

That project is now almost complete. Hospital leaders and local dignitaries held a ribbon-cutting for the new emergency facilities July 30, marking the opening of the expanded ER and the end of the second phase of a $30 million project, according to a news release from the health system.
MUSC said the expanded department includes modern treatment spaces and upgraded technology. The full renovation is expected to be complete in December 2026, according to the release.
“This expansion is a significant investment in the health of our community and our future,” Matt Littlejohn, CEO of MUSC Health–Midlands Division, said in a statement

MUSC has made a concerted effort to expand in the Midlands. Earlier this summer, the health system, along with partner Intuitive Health, opened the state’s first combined ER and Urgent Care at 7620 Garners Ferry Rd. Officials said that facility is meant to address the high costs of emergency care.
MUSC also broke ground this February on a 4,500-square-foot primary care office at 5213 Trenholm Rd., in Forest Acres. The building is expected to be completed this fall.
