South Carolina man working on road crew killed in crash, coroner says

A South Carolina man died in a Georgia hospital weeks after he was hit by a vehicle while he was on a roadwork crew, according to the Aiken County Coroner’s Office.

Kenneth Overby, a 63-year-old North Augusta resident, died May 28, Coroner Darryl Ables said in a news release.

On the morning of May 16, Overby was working in a road repaving zone on Augusta Road at Main Street in Warrenville when he was struck by a vehicle, according to the release.

Aiken County EMS took Overby to Wellstar MCG Medical Health Center in Augusta, where he succumbed to his injuries in the hospital at 4 p.m. last Thursday, the coroner’s office said.

There was no word about what happened to the driver, or if that person faces any criminal charges.

No other injuries were reported in the wreck that continues to be investigated by the coroner’s office and the South Carolina Highway Patrol. An autopsy will be performed in Newberry, the coroner’s office said.

Through May 25, at least 323 people had died on South Carolina roads in 2026, according to the state Department of Public Safety. A minimum of 914 people were killed in collisions in South Carolina in 2025, DPS data shows.

At least 12 people have died in Aiken County crashes this year, and 23 people died in wrecks there in 2025, according to DPS data.
