A National Park Service ranger found Wells\u2019 body in the water off the western tip of Northwest Horn Island two days later.<\/p>\n<p><!-- --><!--]--><!--[--><\/p>\n<p>The Jackson County Sheriff\u2019s Department is investigating the death.<\/p>\n<p><!--]--><!--[--><\/p>\n<p>The Sun Herald has also reached out to Cole for any additional comments.<\/p>\n<p><!-- --><!--]--><!--[--><!--]--><!--[--><\/p>\n<p>Since the investigation began, the Wells family has hired high-profile civil rights and personal injury attorney Ben Crump to represent them.<\/p>\n<p><!-- --><!--]--><!--[--><\/p>\n<p>Wells was Black and went to the island on a boat with white friends, including Cole and her husband\u2019s son. Since then, speculation about his death has been rampant on social media, prompting Jackson County Sheriff John Ledbetter to urge the public to call investigators only with firsthand information.<\/p>\n<p><!-- --><!--]--><!--[--><\/p>\n<p>Cole began by expressing condolences to Wells\u2019 family.<\/p>\n<p><!--]--><!--[--><\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur family, along with the community, grieves the loss of Nolan Wells. Our thoughts and prayers are with Nolan\u2019s family,\u201d she wrote. \u201cOur son, Warren, loved Nolan dearly.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><!-- --><!--]--><!--[--><!-- --><!--]--><!--[--><\/p>\n<p>She also addressed speculation surrounding her decision to initially shut down her Facebook account.<\/p>\n<p><!--]--><!--[--><\/p>\n<p>Cole said she deleted the account because of what she described as \u201cthe very heightened emotional state of social media right now\u201d and out of concern for the safety and privacy of her children.<\/p>\n<p><!-- --><!--]--><!--[--><\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy husband and I have six children, and we covet their privacy,\u201d she wrote. \u201cWe do not believe it is appropriate for our minor children\u2019s photographs to be circulated throughout the Internet, presenting potential threats to their safety.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><!-- --><!--]--><!--[--><\/p>\n<div> <iframe loading=\"lazy\" allow=\"autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; picture-in-picture; web-share\" allowfullscreen=\"true\" frameborder=\"0\" height=\"271\" scrolling=\"no\" src=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/plugins\/post.php?href=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.facebook.com%2Fashlee.cole.3110%2Fposts%2Fpfbid02eh6GE9uNpEyEGtQwyY7HagyGjeC4sKwDELXjR3jAWsDyfR7YUhZCQz9RHKTzsWBGl&amp;show_text=true&amp;width=500\" style=\"border:none;overflow:hidden\" width=\"500\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p><!--]--><!--[--><\/p>\n<p>Cole said she graduated from high school with Wells\u2019 mother, Christine Wells-Wonsley, and emphasized that her family continues to support the Wells family.<\/p>\n<p><!-- --><!--]--><!--[--><\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are from the same community,\u201d Cole said. \u201cI have the utmost respect for her and all of the Wells family. We mourn the loss of Nolan with them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><!-- --><!--]--><!--[--><\/p>\n<p>Cole also denied rumors involving her family, saying neither she nor her husband was at Horn Island \u201cat any point\u201d on July 4.<\/p>\n<p><!--]--><!--[--><\/p>\n<p>She said no one in her family has attempted \u201cto impede with the investigation by law enforcement or to otherwise hamper the family and law enforcement\u2019s quest for answers.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><!-- --><!--]--><!--[--><\/p>\n<p>Cole said her son, Warren, fully cooperated with investigators after returning from the island.<\/p>\n<p><!-- --><!--]--><!--[--><\/p>\n<p>\u201cWarren was interviewed by the Jackson County Sheriff\u2019s Department and cooperated fully,\u201d she wrote. \u201cHe last saw Nolan around 3 p.m. on July 4.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Read more <a href=\"https:\/\/usmovingexpertss.com\/?p=2916\">New locally-owned caf\u00e9 coming to popular retail corridor. Check out where<\/a><\/p>\n<p><!--]--><!--[--><\/p>\n<p>According to Cole, the group left the island without Wells, at around 4:30 p.m. after their boat began taking on water because of problems with the bilge pump.<\/p>\n<p><!-- --><!--]--><!--[--><\/p>\n<p>\u201cNolan made a decision to stay on the island and return later with another group of friends,\u201d she wrote.<\/p>\n<p><!-- --><!--]--><!--[--><!--]--><!--[--><\/p>\n<p>Cole also addressed her position as a judge and defended her decision to temporarily deactivate her social media account on Facebook.<\/p>\n<p><!-- --><!--]--><!--[--><\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes, I am a judge,\u201d she wrote. \u201cI also value transparency. I apologize if anyone was offended that I deleted my social media. There were no nefarious motivations in my deleting my social media. Social media has a lot of positives, but a whole lot of negatives. We live in a world of click-baiting. Sad, but true.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><!-- --><!--]--><!--[--><\/p>\n<p>She concluded by saying her family hopes the public\u2019s attention returns to Wells\u2019 loved ones.<\/p>\n<p><!--]--><!--[--><\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy family is hopeful that this information will help redirect the attention to the Wells family, their grief and their need for our community\u2019s support,\u201d she wrote.<\/p>\n<p><!-- --><!--]--><!--[--><\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, the Jackson County Sheriff\u2019s Department is continuing the death investigation.<\/p>\n<p><!-- --><!--]--><!--[--><\/p>\n<p>Jackson County Coroner Bruce Lynd Jr. said the cause of death for Wells is still pending.<\/p>\n<p><!--]--><!--[--><\/p>\n<p>Wells disappeared after failing to return home from the July 4 trip to the barrier island. He traveled there by private boat with a group of friends, including Cole\u2019s son. The boat launched from a dock in the St. Martin or Gulf Hills area, Ledbetter said.<\/p>\n<p><!-- --><!--]--><!--[--><\/p>\n<p>Investigators have said witnesses reported the original group left Horn Island without Wells after he decided to remain behind. One witness said Wells wanted to stay to talk with a girl and other friends.<\/p>\n<p><!-- --><!--]--><!--[--><\/p>\n<div> <iframe loading=\"lazy\" allow=\"autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; picture-in-picture; web-share\" allowfullscreen=\"true\" frameborder=\"0\" height=\"672\" scrolling=\"no\" src=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/plugins\/post.php?href=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.facebook.com%2Fattorneycrump%2Fposts%2Fpfbid02HPNvMjSNUL5WWWHyHDLGmNruG7HjPkZ1KnyFZFW9Fid9g8n1QoNx42Sr6FeRXEBjl&amp;show_text=true&amp;width=500\" style=\"border:none;overflow:hidden\" width=\"500\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p><!--]--><!--[--><\/p>\n<p>Another friend who was on the island with others told investigators he last saw Wells on the island around 4 p.m.<\/p>\n<p><!-- --><!--]--><!--[--><\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur investigation includes interviewing all the parties involved,\u201d Ledbetter said. \u201cWe are still in the process of doing that.
