Instead, they send out wind advisories.<\/p>\n<p><!--]--><!--[--><\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe looked at other states and what they were doing and noticed that we\u2019re overcautious.\u201d Jill Nagel, district communications officer with GDOT said recently when interviewed about the widening of Interstate 95 in GDOT\u2019s partnership with South Carolina.<\/p>\n<p><!-- --><!--]--><!--[--><\/p>\n<p>Florida\u2019s coastal Brevard County, stretching more than 70 miles on the eastern edge of the state, keeps its bridges open during storms. It\u2019s home to both the John F. Kennedy Space Center and Port Canaveral \u2014 earning it the moniker \u201cSpace Coast.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><!--]--><!--[--><\/p>\n<p>A social media manager in a September 2024 Brevard County\u2019s Emergency Management Facebook post put a stop to the rumors that they close their causeways for winds. \u201cCauseways remain open, but when strong winds are in the area, staying off roads and causeways is best for your safety.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><!-- --><!--]--><!--[--><!-- --><!--]--><!--[--><\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s the plan for GDOT.<\/p>\n<p><!-- --><!--]--><!--[--><\/p>\n<p>The state\u2019s decision to keep the iconic, cable-stayed Talmadge Bridge (locals call it the Savannah bridge) open during an active tropical storm \u200bw\u200bill \u200bhelp people\u200b \u200bevacuate, Nagel said, adding that the Sidney Lanier Bridge that connects to Jekyll Island, Ga., will also remain open.<\/p>\n<p><!--]--><!--[--><\/p>\n<p>But there is a catch. Driving over the bridge in a so-called \u201chigh profile\u201d vehicle could be potentially dangerous. \u201cIt\u2019s not the wind that will damage the bridge; it\u2019s navigating a vehicle over the bridges,\u201d that causes harm to cars and their\u200b occupants, Nagel said.<\/p>\n<p><!-- --><!--]--><!--[--><!-- --><!--]--><!--[--><\/p>\n<p>The Savannah River bridge is designed to move in high winds.<\/p>\n<p><!--]--><!--[--><\/p>\n<p>\u201cBridges are designed to move, right. If they were stiff, they would break.\u201d Nagel responded when asked about the bridge movement. The wind gusts were so strong. So, yes, we want people to be extremely cautious,\u201d Nagel said.<\/p>\n<p><!-- --><!--]--><!--[--><!--]--><!--[--><\/p>\n<h2>Message boards<\/h2>\n<p><!-- --><!--]--><!--[--><\/p>\n<p>When GDOT receives reports of sustained winds from the National Weather Service, the transportation agency will issue wind advisories through social media and news media releases.<\/p>\n<p><!-- --><!--]--><!--[--><\/p>\n<p>The traveling public with be notified of the wind advisories with  at the bridge and on surrounding roads leading to it. Signage will also be placed across the border into South Carolina, and digital Interstate 16 message boards leading directly to the bridge will also have the advisory messaging.<\/p>\n<p><!-- --><!--]--><!--[--><\/p>\n<h2>Wind advisories and what they mean<\/h2>\n<p><!-- --><!--]--><!--[--><\/p>\n<p><b>Condition Yellow: 30 mph sustained winds\u200b:<\/b> High-profile vehicles will be advised not to use high-span or exposed bridges\u200b that are 65 feet tall or higher. The public should use extreme caution if they decide to travel over those bridges.<\/p>\n<p><!--]--><!--[--><\/p>\n<p><b>Condition Red: 40 mph-plus sustained winds\u200b:<\/b> High-span or exposed bridges\u200b that are 65 feet or higher are unsafe for public travel.
