The 2.5 acres was overgrown.<\/p>\n<p><!--]--><!--[--><\/p>\n<p>Neglect caused some damage, but most was caused by squatters and just-plain nosy people wanting to walk around a historic and abandoned building. They trashed rooms, left clothing. Some of the embalming tools were taken.<\/p>\n<p><!-- --><!--]--><!--[--><\/p>\n<p>But what VanBoskerck saw were the hidden gems \u2014 intricate woodwork, a turret, the original fireplace mantels, Eastlake Victorian locks and eight working fireplaces.<\/p>\n<p><!--]--><!--[--><\/p>\n<p>And then there is the stuff left behind by a business that took care of the after-death needs of generations of Pee Dee families.<\/p>\n<p><!-- --><!--]--><!--[--><\/p>\n<p>The embalming room was in place. An array of available burial suits in picture frames. Women\u2019s clothing in boxes. Victorian era furniture.<\/p>\n<p><!-- --><!--]--><!--[--><\/p>\n<p>And the spirits.<\/p>\n<p><!-- --><!--]--><!--[--><!--]--><!--[--><\/p>\n<p>VanBoskerck counts many. She addresses them like friends. She\u2019s been in this sort of work for decades. Rarely is she frightened.<\/p>\n<p><!--]--><!--[--><\/p>\n<p>They are not happy about her leaving, she said.<\/p>\n<p><!-- --><!--]--><!--[--><\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m tired,\u201d she said of the battle with City Hall.<\/p>\n<p><!-- --><!--]--><!--[--><\/p>\n<p>And broke.<\/p>\n<p><!-- --><!--]--><!--[--><\/p>\n<p>The real estate listing doesn\u2019t mention the house\u2019s past.<\/p>\n<p><!-- --><!--]--><!--[--><\/p>\n<p>Instead, it calls it a masterpiece, a proud fixture on the Historical Registry, magnificent, a property that needs a true visionary.<\/p>\n<p><!-- --><!--]--><!--[--><\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis estate is a living testament to Southern grandeur.
