He will be sentenced at a later date. The maximum penalty for this offense is 10 years in prison and a $1 million fine.<\/p>\n<p><!-- --><!--]--><!--[--><\/p>\n<p>A press release from the U.S. Justice Department described the crime this way: \u201cIn advance of cattle auctions, Lutz and his co-conspirators agreed which company would win the bid. During the sales, the agreed-upon losing firm would either not bid or would submit an intentionally-losing bid before bowing out to permit the agreed-upon winner to prevail.<\/p>\n<p><!--]--><!--[--><\/p>\n<p>\u201cThrough the efforts of Lutz and his co-conspirators, Lutz\u2019s employer was able to acquire cattle worth over $1.6 million through rigged sales,\u201d the release said. Lutz\u2019s employer was not identified.<\/p>\n<p><!-- --><!--]--><!--[--><\/p>\n<h2>Ongoing probe<\/h2>\n<p><!-- --><!--]--><!--[--><\/p>\n<p>Lutz is the first defendant to be charged and to plead guilty in an ongoing investigation into bid rigging in the bovine artificial insemination industry, the Justice Department said in its release. Bovine is a scientific word meaning having to do with cattle or related animals such as oxen.<\/p>\n<p><!--]--><!--[--><\/p>\n<p>Lutz was a manager who worked for a bovine artificial insemination firm engaged in the sale of bovine semen in the United States and elsewhere, according to an information (charging document). Here\u2019s where and why<\/a><\/p>\n<p><!-- --><!--]--><!--[--><\/p>\n<p>Company A was in competition with another firm, identified in the information only as \u201cCompany B,\u201d the information said.<\/p>\n<p><!-- --><!--]--><!--[--><\/p>\n<p>Corporations and individuals other than Lutz were \u201cco-conspirators\u201d in his offense, but they are not defendants in Lutz\u2019s case, the information said.<\/p>\n<p><!--]--><!--[--><\/p>\n<p>Lutz\u2019s attorney, David DeVillers of Columbus, was asked for comment but has not yet replied.<\/p>\n<p><!-- --><!--]--><!--[--><\/p>\n<p>Federal prosecutors on the case are Charles Fox, Barry Joyce and Le\u2019Loni C. English. They are with Justice\u2019s antitrust division.<\/p>\n<p><!-- --><!--]--><!--[--><\/p>\n<p>Federal District Judge Edmund A.
