{"id":5061,"date":"2026-08-22T09:35:46","date_gmt":"2026-08-22T09:35:46","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/usmovingexpertss.com\/?p=5061"},"modified":"2026-08-22T09:35:46","modified_gmt":"2026-08-22T09:35:46","slug":"for-the-first-time-a-woman-will-lead-uscs-board-of-trustees","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/usmovingexpertss.com\/?p=5061","title":{"rendered":"For the first time, a woman will lead USC\u2019s Board of Trustees"},"content":{"rendered":"<article><!-- --><!-- --><!-- WPS-5038 -- removed the script from WPS and added the placeholder for trinity player --><!-- --><!-- --><!-- --><!-- --><!-- --><!-- CONTENT --><!--[--><!--[--><!-- --><!--]--><!--[--><\/p>\n<p>For the first time in its 225-year history, the University of South Carolina Board of Trustees will be led by a woman.<\/p>\n<p>Read more <a href=\"https:\/\/usmovingexpertss.com\/?p=5059\">Imran Khan\u2019s party seeks contempt action over jailed leader\u2019s hospital move<\/a><\/p>\n<p><!-- --><!--]--><!--[--><\/p>\n<p>Rose Buyck Newton, a finance professional who has served on the USC Board of Trustees since 2018, was elected Friday as the board\u2019s new chairwoman.<\/p>\n<p><!--]--><!--[--><\/p>\n<p>The Bluffton resident said she was honored to join the state\u2019s growing sorority of education leaders and looked forward to carrying on the university\u2019s mission of education, research and service.<\/p>\n<p><!-- --><!--]--><!--[--><\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have a lot of women doing a lot of great things in the state,\u201d said Newton, nodding to the female chairs of Clemson University, Coastal Carolina University, the College of Charleston and state Superintendent of Education Ellen Weaver. \u201cI\u2019m just glad to be a part of that team, moving higher ed forward in the state of South Carolina.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><!--]--><!--[--><\/p>\n<p>Newton, who had served as the board\u2019s vice chair since 2022, succeeds Thad Westbrook, a USC-trained attorney whose four-year chairmanship was marked by record enrollment, fundraising and state investment.<\/p>\n<p><!-- --><!--]--><!--[--><\/p>\n<p>She\u2019ll be replaced as vice chair by Reid Sherard, a Greenville attorney who joined the board in 2023.<\/p>\n<p><!-- --><!--]--><!--[--><\/p>\n<p>Unlike her controversial election as vice chair four years ago, Newton\u2019s selection Friday was unanimous.<\/p>\n<p><!--]--><!--[--><\/p>\n<p>A third-generation banker who chairs the board at the Bank of Clarendon in Manning, Newton holds a bachelor\u2019s degree from Converse College and a master\u2019s of business administration from the University of South Carolina.<\/p>\n<p><!-- --><!--]--><!--[--><\/p>\n<p>In addition to serving on USC\u2019s board, she also serves on the boards of the S.C. Buyck Jr, served for 28 years on the USC Board of Trustees; her husband, Weston Newton, is a member of the S.C. House of Representatives and chairman of the House Judiciary Committee; and her daughter, Reedy, is a former USC student government president.<\/p>\n<p><!-- --><!--]--><!--[--><\/p>\n<p>In fact, Newton and her daughter were the first mother-daughter to serve on the USC board at the same time.
