{"id":896,"date":"2026-06-03T12:11:45","date_gmt":"2026-06-03T12:11:45","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/usmovingexpertss.com\/?p=896"},"modified":"2026-06-03T12:11:45","modified_gmt":"2026-06-03T12:11:45","slug":"veteran-educators-vie-for-democratic-nomination-in-sc-superintendents-race-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/usmovingexpertss.com\/?p=896","title":{"rendered":"Veteran educators vie for Democratic nomination in SC superintendent\u2019s race"},"content":{"rendered":"<article><!-- --><!-- --><!-- WPS-5038 -- removed the script from WPS and added the placeholder for trinity player --><!-- --><!-- --><!-- --><!-- --><!-- --><!-- --><!-- CONTENT --><!--[--><!--[--><\/p>\n<p>When Democratic voters head to the polls Tuesday, they\u2019ll have a choice between two veteran female educators for state superintendent.<\/p>\n<p>Read more <a href=\"https:\/\/usmovingexpertss.com\/?p=895\">Pricey home falls into ocean on NC\u2019s Outer Banks, creating debris trail, park says<\/a><\/p>\n<p><!-- --><!--]--><!--[--><\/p>\n<p>SC for Ed founder Lisa Ellis, who won the party\u2019s nomination four years ago, is back on the ballot against first-time candidate Sylvia Wright, a former teacher and district curriculum coordinator who has been campaigning since 2024.<\/p>\n<p><!-- --><!--]--><!--[--><\/p>\n<p>The victor will square off with Republican incumbent Ellen Weaver, who drew no challengers within her own party and will be a heavy favorite to win reelection come November.<\/p>\n<p><!--]--><!--[--><\/p>\n<p>In interviews with The State Media Co. earlier this year, Ellis and Wright both expressed distaste for what they perceived as Weaver\u2019s politicization of the office and said their experience in schools gave them a better handle than the Republican on how to address the state\u2019s education issues.<\/p>\n<p><!-- --><!--]--><!--[--><\/p>\n<p>Ellis, who campaigns on nights and weekends while working full time as student activities director at Blythewood High School in Richland School District 2, said she decided to run again at the urging of some political consultant friends who told her they believed she had a real shot at winning this time. (Ellis lost to Weaver by nearly 13 points in 2022).<\/p>\n<p><!--]--><!--[--><\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt had nothing to do with Sylvia Wright,\u201d Ellis said of her decision to get into the race last September. \u201cIt had to do with me and my own push to be a voice for teachers and students in this state at a level where they have to listen to me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><!-- --><!--]--><!--[--><\/p>\n<p>The teacher advocate, whose SC for Ed organization rallied thousands of educators at the State House in 2019, emphasized her continued connection to the classroom as a differentiator from Wright.<\/p>\n<p><!-- --><!--]--><!--[--><\/p>\n<p>\u201cI feel like everything that has happened since Ellen Weaver has been superintendent of education has had a negative outcome on our students, our teachers, our public schools,\u201d Ellis told The State. \u201cAnd again, just being in the trenches, I\u2019ve seen how to fix that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><!--]--><!--[--><\/p>\n<p>Unlike Wright, who quit her district office job last year to focus on campaigning, Ellis said her daily interactions with students, teachers and school administrators continue to provide her valuable insights that inform how she\u2019d serve in the role of state schools chief.<\/p>\n<p><!-- --><!--]--><!--[--><\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m still in the classroom,\u201d she said. \u201cI still see everyday things that are happening that I\u2019m like, well, here\u2019s how you make that better immediately.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><!-- --><!--]--><!--[--><\/p>\n<p>Wright, a North Charleston native who has taught in multiple states and most recently served as district coordinator for secondary education in Dorchester School District 4, said she was inspired to run for state superintendent while researching private preschools for her young grandson.<\/p>\n<p><!--]--><!--[--><\/p>\n<p>The experience instilled in her a \u201cdeep conviction\u201d that all young children across the state deserved equal access to early learning opportunities, she said.<\/p>\n<p><!-- --><!--]--><!--[--><\/p>\n<p>\u201cI sat back in my chair and I said, \u2018OK, Lord. What would you have me to do?\u2019 \u201d Wright told The State. \u201cAnd that\u2019s when superintendent came to my mind.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><!-- --><!--]--><!--[--><\/p>\n<p>The career educator said she\u2019d never previously pondered the statewide elected office, but that after looking into the requirements realized she had all the qualifications and experience necessary for the job.<\/p>\n<p><!--]--><!--[--><\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was like, this is stuff that I\u2019ve already done as a leader,\u201d Wright said. \u201cBuilding the relationships; managing funds; managing people, departments; building capacity in others; using data to move things forward. That\u2019s what I\u2019ve been doing my whole career.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><!-- --><!--]--><!--[--><\/p>\n<p>Wright said while she respects Ellis as a fellow educator, she believes her leadership experience gives her a leg up on her primary competitor.<\/p>\n<p><!-- --><!--]--><!--[--><\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019ve been so low for so long,\u201d she said. \u201cSouth Carolina needs someone in the superintendent role who actually has worked in every level of the system, who has built relationships, who knows how to use data to move things forward.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><!--]--><!--[--><\/p>\n<h2>What would Wright do as SC schools chief?<\/h2>\n<p><!-- --><!--]--><!--[--><\/p>\n<p>Wright\u2019s No. 1 priority \u2014 the reason she quit her job and began withdrawing early from her retirement \u2014 is to bolster early childhood education.<\/p>\n<p>Read more <a href=\"https:\/\/usmovingexpertss.com\/?p=893\">Driver charged in Five Points hit-and-run offered aid to USC student, lawyer says<\/a><\/p>\n<p><!-- --><!--]--><!--[--><\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s been neglected for so long,\u201d she said. \u201cWe need to do a better job or be more intentional and strategic about how we use that money.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><!-- --><!--]--><!--[--><\/p>\n<p>Her goal is to ensure that every 4-year-old in South Carolina, regardless of income, has access to a Pre-K program.<\/p>\n<p><!--]--><!--[--><\/p>\n<p>\u201cUniversal Pre-K,\u201d Wright said. \u201cBecause that\u2019s the foundation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><!-- --><!--]--><!--[--><\/p>\n<p>Her other priorities, if elected state superintendent, are school safety and educator recruitment and retention.<\/p>\n<p><!-- --><!--]--><!--[--><\/p>\n<p>By school safety, Wright clarified, she doesn\u2019t just mean protecting kids from armed intruders.<\/p>\n<p><!--]--><!--[--><\/p>\n<p>She also wants to address the health and safety hazards posed by deteriorating school buildings; the disciplinary issues exacerbated by overcrowded classrooms; and the mental health strain students experience from unchecked bullying.<\/p>\n<p><!-- --><!--]--><!--[--><\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019ve got to do a better job with meeting the needs of the students,\u201d said Wright, who upon taking office wants to convene an advisory council to comprehensively audit school safety and use the findings to develop policy solutions.<\/p>\n<p><!-- --><!--]--><!--[--><\/p>\n<p>\u201cKids can\u2019t learn if they don\u2019t feel safe,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p><!--]--><!--[--><\/p>\n<p>The last pillar of Wright\u2019s platform deals with growing South Carolina\u2019s educator base.<\/p>\n<p><!-- --><!--]--><!--[--><\/p>\n<p>Her plan involves using tuition scholarships to financially incentivize local high school students to become teachers; increasing starting salaries up to $60,000; and improving working conditions by reducing paperwork requirements that drive some teachers out of the classroom.<\/p>\n<p><!-- --><!--]--><!--[--><\/p>\n<h2>What would Ellis do if elected state superintendent?<\/h2>\n<p><!-- --><!--]--><!--[--><\/p>\n<p>Ellis is big on taking better care of public school employees \u2014 from teachers and school administrators to bus drivers and cafeteria workers.<\/p>\n<p><!--]--><!--[--><\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve said for years that a teacher\u2019s working conditions are a student\u2019s learning conditions,\u201d she told The State. \u201cAnd so, we\u2019ve really got to take care of those people that are interacting with our students every day.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><!-- --><!--]--><!--[--><\/p>\n<p>A significant part of creating a better work environment is eliminating requirements that make busy work for teachers and detract from their ability to focus on more important tasks, such as educating students, Ellis said.<\/p>\n<p><!-- --><!--]--><!--[--><\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s so many things that we\u2019re like, \u2018Well, we have to do that to check this box,\u2019 \u201d she said. \u201cBut it makes no sense in 2026.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><!--]--><!--[--><\/p>\n<p>Ellis said the state must also do more to take into consideration the needs of students.<\/p>\n<p><!-- --><!--]--><!--[--><\/p>\n<p>In addition to reducing the frequency of standardized testing and decreasing class sizes, she stressed the importance of studying the negative effects of student technology use and prioritizing student self-regulation to get at the root of increased behavioral problems.<\/p>\n<p><!-- --><!--]--><!--[--><\/p>\n<p>In Ellis\u2019 estimation, the systems currently in place are failing both teachers and students, and she wants to begin peeling away at those systems to get back to what is important for South Carolina students.<\/p>\n<p><!--]--><!--[--><\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019ve been Band-Aiding public education in South Carolina for decades,\u201d she said. \u201cIt\u2019s not working.
