It happened Friday near Kinston, and the brawl ended with one brother hospitalized and the other in jail, officials say.

“The Lenior County Sheriff’s Office … responded to the 2000 block of Ham Street in Kinston in reference to an altercation between two brothers that resulted in serious injuries after one brother was allegedly assaulted with a hatchet,” the sheriff’s office said in a June 22 news release.

“Upon arrival, deputies learned that (a man) had sustained injuries after allegedly being struck with a hatchet by his brother, Linwood Carlton, 40, of Kinston.”

A motive for the attack has not been released.

Linwood Carlton retreated to a bedroom in the home and defied orders to surrender, the sheriff’s office said. He was taken into custody with the help of pepper spray, officials said. Court records show he lives in the 2000 block of Ham Street.

The victim was taken to UNC Health Lenoir for treatment of injuries to his left upper arm, the sheriff’s office said.

Carlton was taken to a facility for pepper spray “decontamination,” then charged with felony attempted first-degree murder, felony assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill/inflicting serious injury, and resisting a public officer, officials said. He is being held without bond.
