Year after man was killed an arrest has been made, South Carolina police say

Almost a year to the day that a South Carolina man was killed, another man was arrested in connection to the 2025 homicide, according to the Camden Police Department.

On Tuesday, 71-year-old Levarn Spells was charged with voluntary manslaughter, police said in a news release.

The charge is connected to the July 5, 2025, death of Antwaun Williams, according to the release.

No bond has been set for Spells, who is locked up in the Kershaw County Detention Center, jail records show.

Williams was 56 when he died, according to his obituary. No cause of death was announced, but police said they searched for shell casings and weapons on the property where Williams’ body was found in the front yard, WLTX reported in 2025.

An “extensive, yearlong investigation” followed, culminating with Spells arrest following a search of a Chesnut Street home, police said. Information about what, if anything, was found that led to the charge was not available.

Tuesday’s search was the most recent of multiple searches executed during the investigation, that included numerous interviews and analysis of forensic evidence conducted by the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division.

“I would like to thank the (Camden Police Department) investigators who stayed vigilant and continued to pursue justice for the victim and his family,” Chief Jack Rushing said in the release.

This was not the first time that Spells has been arrested, Kershaw County court records show.

Prior to Williams’ death, Spells was arrested on Nov. 10, 2023, when he was charged with second-degree assault & battery, according to court records. Spells was released on a $7,500 personal recognizance bond and that charge is pending, court records show.

Just months before that arrest, Spells pleaded guilty on Sept. 18, 2023, to a hit-and-run charge, according to court records.
