Neighborhoods east of Blythewood that rely on the Sandfield Road Bridge over Simmons Creek to get into town will be rerouted for up to two weeks beginning Monday, July 20.

The S. C. Department of Transportation will close the bridge for repairs starting Monday, after a routine bridge inspection found maintenance needs, according to the department.

The transportation department has identified a long detour for drivers, who could be required to take an up to 8-mile detour for those nearest the bridge. That detour takes drivers east on Lawhorn Road, and then west on Langford Road. About 10,000 people a day travel down Langford Road, where the bridge traffic will be rerouted, according to SCDOT figures.
