The Sumter Street parking deck will close on June 1 as part of the city’s multi-year capital improvement plan, aiming to enhance public parking infrastructure around Columbia, a news release said.

Columbia’s capital improvement program includes a parking revitalization plan designed to ensure “a safe and modern parking experience,” the release said.

Improvements to the Sumter Street deck will include restoring concrete that’s been gradually eroded from water, according to the release.

Water that, over time, penetrates a porous concrete surface, impacts the structural integrity of the steel that reinforces the concrete, the release said. Steel weakened by water expands and corrodes, reducing its sturdiness.

The parking revitalization plan, which involves multiple parking facilities around the city, focuses on one parking structure at a time and are accompanied by signage about when construction will begin and when construction is currently underway, the release said.

Residents that hold reserved parking spots in public parking structures have been contacted by city parking services, advising on alternate parking arrangements to minimize disruptions, according to the release.
