A downtown Columbia restaurant long known for sandwiches and more has closed its doors.

Hampton Place Cafe, located at 1230 Hampton St. in downtown Columbia, has closed after more than three decades in business. A note was posted on the door as of the morning of July 28 announcing the decision.
“After 35 years of business, we’ve made the difficult decision to close,” a handwritten note on the door of Hampton Place read on July 28. “We are deeply grateful for every customer who walked through our doors. Thank you for your support.”

Hampton Place’s website notes the business was originally started by Steve “Papa” Gendil in 1990, with an aim to “serve Columbia a fresh, delicious and affordable lunch.” The restaurant has been a go-to for a plethora of sandwiches, salads, soups and more, and was known for its catering.
Among the sandwiches at Hampton Place was the popular Hali Cali, which came with turkey, Swiss cheese, alfalfa sprouts, spinach, tomato, avocado, sunflower seed and house garlic mayo on multi-grain; and the Skyscraper, which came with turkey, ham, roast beef, American and provolone cheese, lettuce, tomato, mustard and Russian dressing served hot on a white roll.
