A former teacher in Columbia was indicted on sex crimes against children by a federal grand jury, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office for South Carolina.

Jonathan Andrew Monk, 44, was charged in a nine-count indictment with attempted production, distribution, and possession of child sexual abuse material, according to a news release.
The case was investigated by the FBI field office in Columbia, and Assistant U.S. Attorney Elle Klein is prosecuting the case, the release said.

Details surrounding the conduct that led to Monk’s arrest was not reported. Neither was the name of the school where he was previously employed.
Monk faces a maximum penalty of 30 years in prison with a mandatory minimum of 15 years, according to the release.
