Driver killed when truck runs off SC road and crashes multiple times, cops say

One person was killed Wednesday night when a Mack truck ran off a Midlands road and crashed into multiple items, according to the South Carolina Highway Patrol.

The single-vehicle collision happened at about 7:15 p.m. in Fairfield County, Master Trooper William Bennett said in a Thursday news release.

The 2013 Mack truck was driving south on S.C. 213, according to Bennett. Near the intersection with Pumphouse Road the truck ran off the right side of the road where it crashed into a ditch then hit a fence before wrecking into a tree and flipping over, Bennett said.

The driver died at the scene, according to Bennett.

The Fairfield County Coroner’s Office has not publicly identified the driver.

Bennett said that the driver was the only person in the truck, and no other injuries were reported.

There was no word if the driver was wearing a seatbelt.

Information about what caused the truck to veer off the road was not available, but the wreck continues to be investigated by the Highway Patrol.

Through Sunday, 482 people had died on South Carolina roads in 2026, according to the state Department of Public Safety. A minimum of 914 people were killed in collisions in South Carolina in 2025, DPS data shows.

At least five people have died in Fairfield County crashes this year, and seven people died in wrecks there in 2025, according to DPS data.
