A former Columbia teacher will stay in jail — pending a federal indictment on sex crimes against children — following a hearing at the Matthew J. Perry Courthouse.

Jonathan Andrew Monk will remain housed at the Sumter County Detention Center after waiving a detention hearing Friday before U.S. Magistrate Judge Thomas Rogers III.
Monk’s decision to waive the hearing wasn’t openly discussed by Taylor Davis Gilliam, Monk’s lawyer, in court. Monk, who’s pled not guilty, could request a new detention hearing at a later date.
The 44-year-old, who appeared Friday afternoon before Rogers shackled and wearing a dark green jumpsuit, was arrested Tuesday after a federal grand jury returned a nine-count indictment involving sex crimes against children.
Monk was a former theater director at Heathwood Hall Episcopal School and a former member and teacher at Trustus Theater.

In a Facebook post, Trustus acknowledged their relationship with Monk and said they were taking the allegations “seriously.”
Heathwood Hall staff told The State they’re cooperating with law enforcement, acknowledged Monk’s arrest and said that Monk resigned from the school in May.
“Heathwood Hall was unaware of this ongoing investigation until his arrest on July 28,” Suzanne Nagy, assistant head of Heathwood Hall told The State in an email Friday afternoon.

Monk is the son of The State reporter John Monk.
