A small town mayor in western North Carolina is facing drug trafficking accusations after deputies reported finding cocaine in his possession and meth at his house, according to investigators.

Robbinsville Mayor Shaun Larry Adams, 46, was arrested Monday and faces a half a dozen drug-related felony charges, including two counts of maintaining a home for controlled substances, officials said.
On Tuesday, the Robbinsville Town Board voted to accept Adams’ request to take a three-month leave of absence from his job, “effective immediately.” Mayoral duties will be assumed by the mayor pro tem, officials said.
Graham County Sheriff Russell Moody says the investigation began Monday, when a routine traffic stop revealed Adams was in the car’s passenger seat with cocaine, a concealed handgun, and drug paraphernalia. The driver, a 46-year-old Tennessee woman, was accused of driving left of the center line, officials said.
“As a result of the investigation, deputies obtained and executed a search warrant at Adams’ residence. During the search, investigators located additional illegal narcotics,” the sheriff’s office said in a news release.

A warrant reports 42.1 grams of methamphetamine was discovered at the home.
Adams has been charged with:
- Felony possession of cocaine
- Felony possession of a Schedule II Controlled Substance
- Felony possession of methamphetamine
- Felony possession with intent to manufacture, sell, or deliver a Schedule II Controlled Substance
- Felony trafficking in methamphetamine
- Two counts of felony maintaining a vehicle, dwelling, or place for controlled substances
- Misdemeanor carrying a concealed firearm
- Misdemeanor possession of drug paraphernalia
“No one is above the law. It does not matter who you are or what position you hold, if there is probable cause that a crime has been committed, the Graham County Sheriff’s Office will investigate,” Sheriff Moody said in the news release. “We remain committed to enforcing the law fairly, impartially, and equally for everyone.”
Adams was elected to his first term as mayor in December 2021 and won re-election in 2025.
Robbinsville has a population of just under 600 people and is about a 210-mile drive west from uptown Charlotte.
