A new study found South Carolina has the 10th highest risk in the nation for fatal workplace accidents.

Most of them are in the transportation industry.
Researchers at Coverage Axis, a commercial insurance company, compared fatality rates over the past three years in 48 states based on reports from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.
The BLS found 40 of the 103 fatalities in South Carolina workplaces in 2024 were in the transportation industry. That was an improvement, the bureau said, over the 2024 number, which was 44.
Private employers reported 28,000 nonfatal workplace injuries and illnesses in South Carolina in 2024.
Coverage Axis found Wyoming was the most dangerous state for workers, and like South Carolina, transportation and utilities is the deadliest industry.
“The result points to the risks faced by workers who spend long hours on the road, operate heavy vehicles, repair infrastructure or work in difficult outdoor conditions,” the insurance company said.

Second was North Dakota’s mining, quarrying, and oil and gas extraction industries.
Mississippi and West Virginia were three and four and Montana, Louisiana and Tennessee, were six, seven and eight, with the most fatalities being in jobs in agriculture, forestry, fishing and hunting.
The reason is these are jobs that involve machinery, vehicles, harsh weather, isolated worksites and physically dangerous tasks, the company said.
Arkansas was fifth due to fatalities in transportation and utilities.
South Dakota was ninth due to construction falls and equipment.
The safest locations were New York, Connecticut, New Jersey, New Hampshire and California.
