A woman who accompanied her child to student orientation Tuesday at a high school in South Carolina was arrested when she was found with a gun, according to the Richland County Sheriff’s Department.

Aprill Yakubu, 52, was charged with carrying a weapon on school grounds, the sheriff’s department said in a news release.
The incident happened at Westwood High School, according to the release. The Richland 2 school is at 180 Turkey Farm Road, near Exit 24 on I-77 in the Blythewood area of Richland County.
At about 9 a.m., Yakubu walked through the metal detector at the school with a firearm in her purse, the sheriff’s department said. A private security officer at the school notified the school resource officer, and Yakubu was arrested then booked into the Alvin S. Glenn Detention Center, according to the release.

Yakubu told deputies that she forgot that she had the firearm in her purse while attempting to enter the school, the sheriff’s department said.
Information about Yakubu’s bond was not available, but she’s not listed on the jail’s inmate roster.
