The deceased in Thursday’s shoot out on Leesburg Road about 12 miles east of Columbia was identified Friday as a 20-year-old man from St. Matthews.

Ja’Sean R. Fritz died after being fatally shot, Richland County Coroner Naida Rutherford said. Richland County deputies said they had chased a car through a rural area before the shootout.
It is not known who shot the dead man.
The incident took place in a rural area in the 4800 block of Leesburg Road, Rutherford said. Numerous sheriff’s and other law enforcement vehicles converged on the scene.
Richland County Sheriff Leon Lott is expected to hold a press conference on the event Friday afternoon.

Early reports said that Richland deputies attempted to stop a vehicle around 1:30 p.m. for suspended tags and then went on a pursuit that ended on Leesburg Road where the vehicle crashed.
Deputies along with K-9 police dogs tracked the suspects approximately 2 ½ hours, according to a law enforcement press release.
“One suspect came in contact with the deputies and gunfire was exchanged between the suspect and deputies. Three additional suspects were apprehended in the woods and multiple guns have been recovered,” the release said.
