Person dies after getting hit by SUV’s mirror then another vehicle, SC cops say

A person who was walking on a busy Richland County road Saturday night was killed when hit by two vehicles, one of which drove away, according to the South Carolina Highway Patrol.

The collision happened at about 9:10 p.m. in Columbia, said Master Trooper Mitchell Ridgeway.

A pedestrian was walking north on Decker Boulevard, according to Ridgeway. Near the intersection with Joye Circle, close to Exit 74 on I-20, the pedestrian was hit by the passenger-side mirror on a 2006 Cadillac SUV that was driving north on Decker Boulevard, Ridgeway said.

That collision knocked the pedestrian down the road where they were hit by an unknown vehicle that also was heading north on Decker Boulevard before it drove away from the crash, according to Ridgeway.

The pedestrian died, Ridgeway said. The Richland County Coroner’s Office has not publicly identified the pedestrian.

Ridgeway said the Cadillac driver was not hurt, and no other injuries were reported.

Information about what caused the crashes was not available, but the wrecks continue to be investigated by the Highway Patrol.

Through Aug. 2, at least 497 people had died on South Carolina roads in 2026, according to the state Department of Public Safety. A minimum of 914 people were killed in collisions in South Carolina in 2025, DPS data shows.

At least 37 people have died in Richland County crashes this year, and 48 people died in wrecks there in 2025, according to DPS data.
