The wildfire burning in Big Sur tripled in size overnight and into Tuesday afternoon, jumping to more than 2,900 acres while continuing to force new evacuations along the coast.

The Timber Fire started at 4.6 acres on Saturday night and has grown steadily over the last two days, reaching 800 acres and 5% containment by Monday afternoon.
As of Tuesday afternoon, the fire had grown to 2,989 acres and remained 5% contained, according to Cal Fire.
A new evacuation order, for Zone MRY-F023, and four evacuation warnings were issued Tuesday at around 12:30 p.m. Evacuation orders also remained in place for four zones — MRY-F025, MRY-F026, MRY-F027 and MRY-F028-A — and evacuation warnings were issued for three additional zones, according to Cal Fire’s website.
The fire was threatening 259 structures.
Overnight, the northern and eastern portions of the fire remained active, and firefighters observed single-tree torching and upslope runs, according to a post by the U.S. Forest Service in the Los Padres National Forest on Facebook.

The fire continued to hold on the east side of Highway 1, according to the post. Fire crews were working to protect structures along Highway 1 in the Ventana area.
As of Tuesday morning, all state parks in Big Sur were closed. As of midday, Highway 1 was closed to the public between Fernwood Resort and Julia Pfeiffer Burns State Park Vista Point, according to the California Highway Patrol.
On Monday afternoon, Monterey County announced that an evacuation shelter for Timber Fire evacuees had been opened at Carmel Middle School at 4380 Carmel Valley Road. The shelter will remain open until all evacuation orders are lifted.

The cause of the fire is currently under investigation.
