A Midlands man died after drowning in the Savannah River, according to the Aiken County Coroner’s Office.

Justin Swearingen, 40, of Aiken was seen swimming in the Savannah River on Aug. 15, 2026, before he went under the surface, spurring a response from bystanders who pulled the man to shore, according to a news release.
Swearingen was transported to an area hospital where he died two days later, the release said.

While a toxicology report remains pending, Swearingen’s death was ruled accidental due to drowning, according to the coroner’s office.
