Trucks crash head-on and a driver is killed in fiery wreck, SC cops say

One person was killed Tuesday night when a box truck crashed head-on into a heavy duty pickup truck, according to the South Carolina Highway Patrol.

The collision happened at about 9:50 p.m. in McCormick County, said Master Trooper Hannah Davidson.

A 2022 GMC box truck was driving south on U.S. 221, according to Davidson. Near the intersection with Scott’s Ferry Road the GMC crossed the center line and hit a 2023 Ford F-450 that was driving north on U.S. 221, Davidson said.

The GMC caught fire and the driver died, according to Davidson.

The McCormick County Coroner’s Office has not publicly identified the GMC driver.

No other injuries were reported by Davidson.

There was no word if anyone involved in the wreck was wearing a seatbelt.

Information about what caused the GMC to veer into oncoming traffic was not available, but the crash continues to be investigated by the Highway Patrol.

Through Sunday, 534 people had died on South Carolina roads in 2026, according to the state Department of Public Safety. A minimum of 914 people were killed in collisions in South Carolina in 2025, DPS data shows.

At least three people have died in McCormick County crashes this year, and one person died in a wreck there in 2025, according to DPS data.
