Two students — including a 6-year-old — and one adult were caught carrying a firearm at schools across Richland County, according to Sheriff Leon Lott.

On Aug. 18, around 7:30 a.m., a school resource deputy at JP Thomas Elementary School was alerted to a 6-year-old carrying an assault pistol holding extremely lethal rounds of .300 Blackout, Lott said.
The weapon was safely taken away from the child and his mother, Destar Hall, 35, was later arrested and charged with unlawful conduct toward a child, Lott said during a news conference Thursday.
Around 9 a.m., Tuesday, another student at Richland Northeast High School was found with a handgun with a clip containing 17 rounds but nothing in the chamber, the sheriff said. The school resource deputy was notified after The 16-year-old walked through a metal detector with the weapon in his bookbag, Lott said.

He arrested and transported to department of juvenile justice.
On Wednesday, a woman was caught concealing a small handgun after walking through a metal detector at Richland County High School Lott did not name.
The woman — Cassandra McGee, 40 — was charged with possession of a weapon on school grounds.
“The message should be to young people and to adults: the metal detectors work,” Lott said. “You try to come into a school with a weapon, it’s going to go off, and you’re going to get arrested. Zero tolerance for that.”
