A Greenville County sheriff’s deputy was wounded and a man was injured Friday in an exchange of gunfire involving deputies, according to the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division.

The incident began when a deputy encountered a man carrying a gun near the intersection of Page Drive and White Horse Road. The man, identified as 42-year-old Walter Jason Smith, pointed the firearm at the deputy’s patrol car, prompting an exchange of gunfire, according to a news release.
Smith ran into a nearby field, where a second deputy responded. Another exchange of gunfire followed, striking one deputy in the shoulder and Smith in the leg.

Both were taken to a hospital for treatment. The deputy was later released.
SLED, which was asked by the Greenville County Sheriff’s Office to investigate, charged Smith with two counts of attempted murder, possession of a firearm or ammunition by a person convicted of a violent offense and possession of a weapon during a violent crime.
Smith will be booked into the Greenville County Detention Center after he is released from the hospital.
