A former Sumter County detention officer has been charged with misconduct in office, the sheriff’s office said in a news release.

After an investigation, the Sumter County Sheriff’s Office charged Jenaea Wells, 49, of Bishopville, with furnishing or attempting to furnish a prisoner with contraband and misconduct in office. Wells began working at the detention center in February.
Wells allegedly was paid to deliver an illegal substance into the detention with the intent of giving it to an inmate, the sheriff’s office said. The sheriff’s office did not disclose the substance.

Wells was taken into custody Friday evening when she reported to the detention center for her shift, the sheriff’s office said.
Wells was booked into the Sumter County Sheriff’s Office Detention Center and released on bond.
