Labor Day is the last federal holiday before we say goodbye to summer, and it’s fast approaching. This year, it falls on Monday, Sep. 7.

The holiday is the perfect time to take a getaway with friends and family and get much-needed rest from work, even if traveling is more expensive than usual. There are plenty of great places in South Carolina to travel to and visit, and two SC cities were among the top trending destinations for the holiday.
It’s a great occasion to go all out, but what happens if you forget to grab extra supplies or groceries for your Labor Day celebration? Will stores be open on a federal holiday?
Here’s a list of what’s open and closed on Labor Day in the Columbia and Lexington areas:
Local government offices
Columbia City Hall, West Columbia City Hall, and Lexington Town Hall will all be closed on Monday and will open back up on Tuesday.
Garbage pickup
Garbage pickup will remain on its normal schedule in Columbia even though the government office will be closed. Waste management in Lexington will remain on schedule on Monday, despite the holiday.
West Columbia’s sanitization routes will be moved to Tuesday instead of Monday, but there are no other changes.
Grocery stores
Although Labor Day is a federal holiday, many stores will remain open or have little changes to their store hours. The following grocery stores will remain open: Publix, Walmart, Food Lion, Target, Trader Joe’s, Whole Foods Market, and Piggly Wiggly.

Some locations may have different store hours for Labor Day. Call your local grocery store to make sure they’re open, just to be safe.
ALDI will close earlier for the holiday and will close at 6 p.m. instead of 8 p.m.
Pharmacies
Walgreens and CVS will be open for Labor Day. They should operate with normal store hours.
Banks
The Federal Reserve will be closed on the holiday, so most banks will also be closed. If you need to go to the bank, make sure to do it before Monday. ATMs should still work fine on Labor Day.
Post office, FedEx and UPS
The U.S. Postal Service will be closed on Labor Day. If you want to purchase stamps, mail packages, or ship urgent letters or packages on Monday, you can use the Self-Service Kiosks available at select post offices.
FedEx pickup and delivery will be closed, but their offices will be open with modified store hours. UPS will be closed on Monday for deliveries, however, some of its stores may be open. Call ahead before you visit a local store.
