A funeral for legendary attorney Joseph “Joe” Rice will be held on Monday afternoon in downtown Charleston, according to Rice’s obituary.

The funeral will begin at 2 p.m. Monday, Sept. 14, at the Charleston Gaillard Center, whose main performance hall seats some 1,800.
A Celebration of Life will immediately follow in the Grand Ballroom of The Gaillard Center.
“All who knew and loved Joe are invited to attend and join in remembering a life lived with purpose, generosity and extraordinary impact,” the obituary said.
Rice, 72, died last Thursday at his office at the Motley Rice law firm near the Patriots’ Point Naval & Maritime Museum. He was nationally known as a legal giant whose lawsuits against Big Tobacco, addictive opioid manufacturers and asbestos, among others, put a spotlight on public dangers and brought needed safety reforms.

The obituary said in part that Rice “passed away suddenly and peacefully” Thursday, Sept. 3.
“Joe was born on March 25, 1954, in Winnsboro, SC, to the late Donnie “Don” Dewey Rice, Jr. and Betty Mae Dunlap Rice,” the obituary said.
“He is survived by his college sweetheart and wife of 47 years, Lisa Summer Rice; his daughter and law partner, Ann E. Rice Ervin; son-in-law, R. Tucker Ervin; and his beloved grandson, Beckett Rice Ervin,” the obituary said.
The obituary continued, “Joe believed deeply in the value of hard work and the importance of loving what you do. He worked until his last moments. His work ethic and love for what he did shaped a career that began at the University of South Carolina, where he earned his B.A. in 1976 and J.D. 1979.”
