A hiker got lost at Congaree National Park, Columbia Fire Department says

A man who got lost while hiking in South Carolina’s Congaree National Park on Tuesday had to be rescued, according to the Columbia Fire Department.

Multiple crews of firefighters responded to the park to assist National Park Service rangers locate the missing hiker, the fire department said in a news release.

Fire department officials said that their crews encountered challenging terrain and water during the search and rescue. As a result, the emergency responders had to use water assets to safely reach the missing man, according to the release.

“Working alongside park rangers, firefighters located the hiker and safely transported him back to his vehicle,” officials said in the release.

No injuries were reported.

Information about where inside the park the hiker was tracked down was not available.

“The incident highlights the value of strong partnerships and coordinated response between our department and the National Park Service,” fire department officials said. “The combined efforts of firefighters and park rangers resulted in the safe rescue of the hiker and a positive outcome.”
