Woman dies when car takes flight and flips in crash, South Carolina coroner says

A South Carolina woman was killed Tuesday in a crash where the car she was driving launched in the air, according to the Greenwood County Coroner’s Office.

Elizabeth Rae Bloomer, a 74-year-old from Greenwood, is the driver who died, the coroner’s office said.

The single-vehicle collision happened at about 2:45 p.m. in the Ninety-Six area of Greenwood County, said Master Trooper Brandon Bolt of the South Carolina Highway Patrol.

Bloomer was driving a 2006 Buick sedan west on S.C. 246, close to the intersection with Kinard Avenue, which is near a Piggly Wiggly grocery store. The car then ran off left side of the road where it hit a culvert and several trees, causing it to go airborne and flip before crashing to the ground upside down, officials said.

Bloomer died at the scene, according to the coroner’s office.

No other injuries were reported.

There was no word if Bloomer was wearing a seatbelt, and information about what caused the Buick to veer off the road was not available.

Neither Bloomer’s cause nor the manner of death was determined, and the wreck continues to be investigated by the Highway Patrol and coroner’s office.

Through Monday, at least 603 people had died on South Carolina roads in 2026, according to the state Department of Public Safety. A minimum of 914 people were killed in collisions in South Carolina in 2025, DPS data shows.

At least eight people have died in Greenwood County crashes this year, and five people died in wrecks there in 2025, according to DPS data.
