Early-morning wreck at intersection leaves driver dead, South Carolina cops say

One person was killed early Sunday morning when a pickup truck and SUV were involved in a crash, according to the South Carolina Highway Patrol.

The collision happened at about 4:30 a.m. in Oconee County in South Carolina’s Upstate region, said Sgt. Tyler Tidwell.

A Ford F-250 pickup was driving east on Secondary 24 when it collided with a Hyundai Tucson SUV that was heading east as it was entering the road from Taylor Road, according to Tidwell. The Hyundai then ran off the right side of the road and overturned, Tidwell said.

The SUV driver died, according Tidwell.

The Oconee County Coroner’s Office hasn’t publicly identified the SUV driver.

There was no word if the pickup driver was hurt, but Tidwell did not report any other injuries.

Information if anyone involved in the wreck was wearing a seatbelt was not available, and Tidwell did not say if the crash is under investigation.

Through Sept. 7, at least 605 people had died on South Carolina roads in 2026, according to the state Department of Public Safety. A minimum of 914 people were killed in collisions in South Carolina in 2025, DPS data shows.

At least nine people have died in Oconee County crashes this year, and 17 people died in wrecks there in 2025, according to DPS data.
