A person died Thursday afternoon after veering off the road and crashing into a ditch and tree in Aiken County, according to the South Carolina Highway Patrol.

No further details on what caused the vehicle to crash were immediately available.
The crash happened around 5:44 p.m. on J Wood Road near Jackson FE Road, Master Trooper Brandon Bolt said.

The driver was the only person in the 2008 Lincoln MKZ. The vehicle was traveling north on J Wood Road when it “left the right side of the road,” struck a ditch and then a tree, according to the Highway Patrol. No other injuries were reported.
The crash remains under investigation. The Aiken County Coroner’s Office will release the driver’s identity.
