A 46-year-old West Columbia man was shot and injured by Lexington County Sheriff’s deputies Friday morning after he fired a shotgun at the officers, according to a news release. The officers were not injured.

The shooting occurred in the early morning of Friday, Sept. 18 in the 200 block of Shadowfield Drive, west of Lexington Medical Center. The sheriff’s department received two 911 calls from the area. The first was a hang-up, and on the second, the caller was “incoherent,” and made “threatening statements about us being prepared and not sending a rookie,” according to the news release
Two deputies responded and encountered the man standing behind an SUV with a shotgun, according to Lexington County Sheriff Bryan Jay Koon. The man fired at the deputies, who returned fire and struck him multiple times, the release said.
Deputies were not injured, according to the release.
Lexington County EMS took the man, whose identity has not yet been released, to a hospital. His condition was also not released.
Koon said the man has a criminal history that includes assault and battery, drug possession, public drunkenness and domestic violence.

“We’re very familiar with this residence,” Koon said in the news release, also saying the department is “very thankful the deputies are physically OK,” and that they followed their training and mitigated the situation, Koon added.
Both deputies have been placed on paid administrative leave while the department conducts an internal policy review.
“I’ve also asked SLED to conduct the investigation into the shooting itself, which is standard procedure for us,” Koon said. “We always do that to ensure an unbiased and thorough assessment of what happened.”
