Driver killed in crash with dump truck at intersection, South Carolina cops say

A South Carolina man was killed in a recent crash involving a dump truck, officials said.

Ivan Arnold Brooks, a 69-year-old from Westminster, is the driver who died in what Oconee County Coroner Karl Addis called an accident.

The two-vehicle collision happened near the Walhalla area of Oconee County on Sept. 17 at about 8:45 a.m., said Master Trooper Mitchell Ridgeway of the South Carolina Highway Patrol.

Brooks was driving a 1997 Chevrolet Blazer SUV east on Hefner Road, according to Ridgeway. At the intersection with S.C. 11, the Chevy SUV was crossing when it was hit on the driver’s side by a 2005 Peterbilt dump truck, Ridgeway said.

The dump truck, which was driving south on S.C. 11, then ran off the left side of the road and overturned, according to Ridgeway.

The dump truck driver was hurt and taken to an area hospital, Ridgeway said. Further information on the dump truck driver’s condition was not available.

Brooks suffered blunt force trauma injuries and died at the scene, according to Addis.

No other injuries were reported.

There was no word if either of the drivers were wearing seatbelts, but the wreck continues to be investigated by the Highway Patrol.

Through Sept. 13, at least 621 people had died on South Carolina roads in 2026, according to the state Department of Public Safety. A minimum of 914 people were killed in collisions in South Carolina in 2025, DPS data shows.

At least 10 people have died in Oconee County crashes this year, and 17 people died in wrecks there in 2025, according to DPS data.
