One person was killed Wednesday night in a crash near a Palmetto State landmark, according to the South Carolina Highway Patrol.

The two vehicle-collision happened at about 9:20 p.m. in Cherokee County, said Lance Cpl. Brittany Glover.
A moped was driving west on Peachoid Road, where it collided with a 2013 Chevrolet Equinox that was turning left onto Whelchel Road, according to Glover. That’s in Gaffney, about half a mile from the iconic Peachoid water tower.
The moped driver died at the scene, Glover said. The Cherokee County Coroner’s Office has not publicly identified the moped driver.
Glover said that neither the Chevy driver nor the vehicle’s passenger were hurt, and no other injuries were reported.

There was no word if the moped rider was wearing a helmet, or if anyone in the Chevy was wearing a seatbelt, but the wreck is being investigated by the Highway Patrol.
Through Sunday, 634 people had died on South Carolina roads in 2026, according to the state Department of Public Safety. A minimum of 914 people were killed in collisions in South Carolina in 2025, DPS data shows.
At least nine people have died in Cherokee County crashes this year, and 15 people died in wrecks there in 2025, according to DPS data.
