Just before 9 a.m., a 35-year-old woman from Steilacoom, Washington, with two juvenile passengers driving south on I-5 crashed into the lefthand barrier near Center Drive, WSP Sgt. John Dattilo told The News Tribune.

A Washington State Patrol incident summary described how the woman’s car, a 2011 gray Volkswagen Tiguan, struck the left shoulder barrier and veered to the right shoulder. The car then veered left, struck a semi truck, then hit the left barrier and rolled over, coming to rest in the HOV lane.

The car rolled multiple times, Dattilo said. The semi-truck driver was uninjured.

As the passengers exited the car, passersby saw the woman attempt to stab the juveniles with a knife.

Two uniformed JBLM soldiers driving on the highway pulled over and ran to the scene to subdue the woman, Dattilo said.

Nathan Wilkinson was driving to work on southbound I-5 near DuPont, south of Tacoma, when he saw commotion in the commuter lane in the distance.

As he approached in his car, he watched two soldiers in uniform wrestling with a woman holding a knife.

The soldiers held the woman on the ground and took the knife from her, Wilkinson said. Washington State troopers eventually arrived and took the woman into custody.

She will be booked on suspicion of driving under the influence, vehicular assault and first-degree assault, the incident summary said.

The News Tribune does not typically name people who haven’t been formally charged with a crime.

She was transported to the hospital in stable condition. One of the juveniles sustained knife wounds and broken bones but was in stable condition, Dattilo said. The specific injuries of the other juvenile were not immediately reported, but the child was also in stable condition Monday.

The children involved were ages 9 and 15, according to the summary.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation.

Wilkinson saw wreckage from the collision spanning across the roadway for nearly a half-mile of I-5.

He hopes the two soldiers are recognized for intervening in the dangerous situation.
