Her ex-boyfriend, Javier M. Gonzales, 28, admitted in Franklin County Superior Court in Washington state on Tuesday to kidnapping, assaulting and threatening to kill the woman in August 2026.

“I genuinely believed that night was my last,” she said in letter during Gonzales’ sentencing hearing. “Throughout the incident I was desperately trying to find a way to escape.”

The woman was able to escape after throwing the gun from the car. It has shaken how she looks at safety, trust and relationships, she said.

“What hurts the most is knowing that Javier was capable of putting me through that … while I was carrying his child,” she said.

Gonzales pleaded guilty in Franklin County Superior Court to second-degree kidnapping, second-degree assault with a deadly weapon and harassment.

He didn’t have any prior felony history, leaving him with a sentence between 2 and about 2 1/2 years in prison.

Prosecutors and defense attorneys agreed to recommend the top end of the sentencing range.

Defense attorney Katherine Bohnet said that her client wanted to take responsibility for his actions quickly and recognized that he had an issue with alcohol.

“He wanted to do his time so he could get back to his children,” she said.

Judge Jackie Shea-Brown followed the recommendation, but questioned Gonzales’ demeanor in the courtroom, saying he was smiling and laughing during the sentencing.

“I’m not sure to what extent you fully appreciate your actions,” she said. “Being in this forum is not necessarily the easiest thing and reactions can be different and odd, such as smiling and laughing. Which conveys to me either two things. One, you really don’t take this seriously, or two you’re just uncomfortable and don’t know how else to react.”

She pointed out that his actions had a significant impact to the mother of his child, and she hoped that the care for his children would guide his actions going forward.

Attack and kidnapping

Gonzales sent several text messages to his ex-girlfriend saying he planned to kill her. Then he went to her home in west Pasco and started banging on the door and yelling for her to come outside. When she stepped out, Gonzales allegedly pistol-whipped her on the side of her face, court documents said.

When she was stunned from the attack, he grabbed her by the hair and allegedly forced her into his Ford Fusion. As he did this, Gonzales said he planned to kill her several times, court documents said.

He then began driving around with the gun on his lap. He racked the pistol, putting a round in the chamber.

At some point during the drive she threw the gun out of the car. When he pulled over at a gas station on Road 68, she ran to a nearby police officer.

Court documents said he was looking for the weapon while officers talked to his ex-girlfriend.

When police approached him, he began walking away. He was stopped and arrested. Police found a 9mm pistol nearby with a round in the chamber.

He agreed to do a breathlyzer test about an hour after his initial arrest. His blood-alcohol level was allegedly 0.15%, nearly two times the legal limit, court documents said.
