Wilson, the Republican nominee for governor, filed jointly with his wife, Jennifer, and they claimed their two children, Michael and Anna Grace, as dependents.

The State newspaper requested access to the tax returns of Wilson and state Rep. Jermaine Johnson, the Democratic nominee for governor to allow people to understand how hopefuls for governor earn money, types of expenses they incur, and how much they pay in income taxes.

From 2021 through 2025, Wilson paid more than $187,000 in federal income tax liability and a more than $53,000 state income tax liability. The Wilsons reduced their state income tax liability by claiming the two-wage earner credit, which amounted to $1,145 over the five-year period.

Wilson during his campaign has said he will work towards eliminating the state income tax.

“What you see with Alan Wilson is what you get — he’s honest with no secrets or surprises,” Deputy Campaign Manager Claire Brady said in a statement. “As governor, he’ll fight for South Carolina families the same way by being direct and focused on delivering real results for the state.”

Wilson earns $208,000 a year as attorney general. In the last five years, Wilson also reported a total of almost $149,000 in income from the National Guard, where he serves as a colonel. That income is not taxed by the state of South Carolina.

In 2024, the Wilsons also sold Jennifer Wilson’s father’s Lowcountry house after he died. They reported a $49,000 loss. They deducted the maximum of $3,000 from their income in 2024 and 2025 and appear to be carrying over the capital loss to subsequent years.

In 2021, the Wilsons paid $3,629 in property taxes and $17,136 in home mortgage interest, which can be deducted from federal income tax.
