Columbia City Council on Oct. 20 gave a first approval on an ordinance that would allow Reds Dogs and Catering to operate a stationary sidewalk cart at 1701 Main St. for a period of one year. That would be on the sidewalk right in front of the Richland County Courthouse, and just up the block from Columbia City Hall.
According to city paperwork, Reds Dogs is owned by Deandraya Waddell, and will offer a host of goodies, including hot dogs, barbecue chicken sandwiches, nachos, sausage dogs, chips and drinks. City documents note the hours of operation for the hot dog cart would be 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday and 7 to 11 p.m. on Saturdays.

During the Oct. 20 council meeting, Mayor Daniel Rickenmann jokingly asked Waddell if the cart would have chili and onions for the dogs, noting that a good hot dog stand needs “all the condiments.” The mayor was subsequently assured the cart would, indeed, have all the trimmings.
The Main Street corridor north of the State House has continued to evolve in the last decade plus, with new restaurants, nightlife, stores, hotels and apartments, with more on the way. It has a mix of government buildings, such as city hall and the county courthouse, as well as arts amenities such as the Columbia Museum of Art and the Nickelodeon Theater.
