Former U.S. attorney and South Carolina lawmaker Peter McCoy will likely be the next ambassador to Montenegro, a small coastal Balkan country.

McCoy, a Charleston attorney, was nominated for the diplomatic post by President Donald Trump’s administration on Monday. His nomination requires approval from the U.S. Senate.
McCoy currently chairs the state-owned utility Santee Cooper board of directors, a role Gov. Henry McMaster tapped him for in 2021.

The Republican also served in the state House for several years from 2011 through 2020, where he chaired the Judiciary Committee. McCoy resigned from the state House after the Trump administration nominated him to be the South Carolina U.S. attorney in 2020.
McCoy later resigned from that post in 2021.
The Trump administration also nominated former South Carolina Lt. Gov. Andre Bauer to an ambassadorship to Belize in April. His nomination is pending.
