Accident involving long hair and go-kart leaves SC woman dead, coroner says

A South Carolina woman recently died after getting her hair stuck in a go-kart, the Sumter County Coroner’s Office told The State on Thursday.

Baylee Johnson, a 24-year-old from Sumter, was the victim in what Coroner Robbie Baker called an accident. Her death was previously reported by WIS.

The accident happened Aug. 23 at a go-kart track on Skinner Road, Baker told The State. That’s not far from the junction of I-95 and U.S. 378.

Johnson was driving a go-kart when her long ponytail got stuck in the vehicle’s sprocket, according to Baker. Johnson’s neck was then hyperextended backward to the point that it cut off oxygen, Baker said.

Johnson had no pulse by the time she was extricated from the go-kart, according to Baker. Emergency responders were able to revive her and took her to an area hospital, but Johnson later died Aug. 31, Baker said.

Johnson was pregnant at the time of the accident, and the unborn child also died, according to an obituary.

Johnson, who worked at Prisma Health OB/GYN–Sumter, is survived by her boyfriend, parents and sisters among other family, the obituary said.

Funeral arrangements include a visitation from 5-7 p.m. Friday at Elmore-Cannon-Stephens Funeral Home, and a memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at Northside Baptist Church, according to the obituary.
