Driver killed in crash that left another hospitalized, South Carolina cops say

One driver was killed and another was injured Saturday night when their vehicles crashed on a Midlands road, according to the South Carolina Highway Patrol.

The collision happened at about 7:40 p.m. in Clarendon County, said Lance Cpl. Brittany Glover.

A 2016 Ford Fusion was driving south on Old Manning Road, and a 2021 Mercedes-Benz was heading north on the same road in the New Zion area of Clarendon County, according to Glover. Near the intersection with Salem Road the vehicles collided and both drivers were taken to an area hospital, Glover said.

The Ford driver later died, according to Glover. The Clarendon County Coroner’s Office has not publicly identified the Ford driver.

Further information on the Mercedes-Benz driver’s condition was not available.

Glover said the drivers were the only people in their respective vehicles, and no other injuries were reported.

There was no word if either of the drivers were wearing a seatbelt.

Information about what caused the vehicles to collide was not available, but the wreck continues to be investigated by the Highway Patrol.

Through Aug. 23, at least 558 people had died on South Carolina roads in 2026, according to the state Department of Public Safety. A minimum of 914 people were killed in collisions in South Carolina in 2025, DPS data shows.

At least 14 people have died in Clarendon County crashes this year, and 11 people died in wrecks there in 2025, according to DPS data.
