The two-vehicle collision happened at about 5:55 a.m. on Oct. 9, said Master Trooper William Bennett.

A 2021 Freightliner tractor trailer was driving east on I-20 when it had a mechanical issue and was disabled on the interstate at the 70-mile marker, according to Bennett. That’s in Columbia, near the junction with U.S. 321.

The tractor trailer was unoccupied when it was hit in the rear by a 2007 Prevost motorhome that also was driving east on I-20, Bennett said.

The RV driver, who was the only person in the motorhome, died at the scene, according to Bennett. The Richland County Coroner’s Office has not publicly identified the RV driver.

No other injuries were reported.

There was no word if the RV driver was wearing a seatbelt, or where the tractor trailer driver was when the wreck happened, but the crash continues to be investigated by the Highway Patrol.

Through Oct. 4, at least 667 people had died on South Carolina roads in 2026, according to the state Department of Public Safety. A minimum of 914 people were killed in collisions in South Carolina in 2025, DPS data shows.
