Midlands minister arrested for pocketing more than $15K from church, SLED says

A baptist minister at a church in the Midlands was charged with stealing more than $15,000 from a house of worship, according to the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division.

Scott Dwayne Brown, 62, was charged Monday with two counts of breach of trust with fraudulent intent — value more than $2,000 but less than $10,000, according to a news release. Across two different periods, since 2021, Brown allegedly stole $17,714 from Hagood Avenue Baptist Church in Barnwell while serving as a minister in the church, according to arrest warrants.

The first series of thefts is believed to have occurred from July 2021 to October 2025, when Brown allegedly took $9,815 from the church, a warrant said. From February 2022 to October 2025, Brown reportedly stole another $7,899, according to the warrant.

Brown was booked into the Barnwell County Detention Center.
