Mezzetta said it was issuing a voluntary recall but did not say specifically where the lot was sold. Mezzetta products are sold in South Carolina and around the country.
Headquartered in American Canyon, California, Mezzetta said the recall applies only to a specific lot of 32 ounce Mezzetta Golden Greek peperoncini medium heat. They issued the recall after learning someone had posted a video on social media “showing a potential pest contaminant in a jar.”
“We have contacted the consumer and have moved quickly to investigate the situation,” the company said in a statement.
The company said it has not received reports of illnesses or injuries.
Photos posted by @reizargt on TikTok showed a mouse with the caption, “Public service announcement — don’t buy this brand of peperoncinis. I have a dead mouse in mine,” WBALTV reported.
The statement said the company knows where the product was distributed but did not make that information public.
“We have identified the customers that received product from the recalled lot and are working directly with them to isolate and remove the affected product from sale,” the statement said.

They also said they are retrieving the product involved looking into records on production, sanitation and food safety.
“Food safety is our highest priority,” the company said. “Our facilities follow established programs for sanitation, pest control, product quality and traceability designed to protect our products throughout production and distribution.”
Also, they said they use technology and established food safety controls to mitigate risk.
“For generations, families have trusted Mezzetta products on their tables. We take that trust seriously.”
Messetta was founded by Italian immigrant Giuseppe Luigi Mezzetta and his son Daniel Mezzetta in 1935 in San Francisco. It remains a privately held, family-owned company, now led by Jeff Mezzetta, the fourth generation of the family to lead the company.
