Summer-like temperatures have started creeping back this week throughout the state, and it’s only supposed to get hotter before the weekend, according to the latest forecast from the National Weather Service.
By the end of the week, near-record highs are expected in Central South Carolina and the Upstate.
Even though we’re only a couple of weeks into fall, current weather patterns suggest that an early fall forecast from the Old Farmer’s Almanac may be wrong — or have a rough start. The group predicted a cooler-than-average season.
Here’s what to expect for the rest of this week:
How hot will it get in SC?
On Tuesday, the high in Columbia (89 degrees) approached the record high set in 1962 (90 degrees) at this point in the year, according to AccuWeather.
Today, Oct. 14, a record high set in 1985 (88 degrees) is expected to be broken in Columbia, with the maximum temperature reaching 90 degrees. Temperatures on Thursday (90) and Friday (89) are supposed to tie record highs also set in 1985.
The NWS said that counties throughout Central SC, such as Aiken, Barnwell and Saluda, will face similar temperatures by the end of the week.

The summer-like heat may be taking away joy from those who want to experience fall weather already, but there’s good news for this weekend. Here’s what the weather will look like:
Forecast this weekend
After an intense week of hot temperatures, a dramatic shift in weather should make its way to South Carolina. A strong, dry cold front will approach on Friday, bringing with it much cooler temperatures throughout the Palmetto State.
Columbia is expected to have highs of 67 and 65 degrees with a low of 44 degrees on Saturday and Sunday, respectively. Similar temperatures are forecast across the Midlands.
Once it starts to cool down this weekend, South Carolinians can finally enjoy fall weather. Winter is still a couple of months away, but the Old Farmer’s Almanac also predicted a cool, wet and stormy season by the time December comes around.
Snow is still unlikely in much of the state, but considering how unpredictable the weather has been in SC, who knows what to expect.
